The surface assembly technology is to mount components on the PCB surface, so there are strict requirements for the coplanarity of components’ pins, which generally must be 0.1mm tolerance zone.This tolerance area consists of two planes, one is the welding area plane of PCB, and the other is the plane where the component pins are located.If the plane where the three lowest points of all pins of the component located is parallel to the welding area plane of the PCB, and the distance error between each pin and the plane does not exceed the tolerance range, then the mounting and welding can be carried out reliably; otherwise, welding faults such as pin virtual welding and missing welding may occur.
There are many methods to detect the coplanar property of the component pins. The simplest method is to put the component on the optical plane and measure the distance between the non-coplanar pins and the optical plane with a microscope.
At present, the high-precision SMT system generally has its own mechanical vision system, which can automatically detect the coplanarity of components before PCB assembly and exclude components that do not meet the requirements.
