(1) Electrostatic shielding (or barrier packaging) materials
Electrostatic shielding (or barrier packaging) materials prevent electrostatic discharge, penetration of the package, and damage to the pcb assembly.
(2) Antistatic materials
The antistatic material can be used as an inexpensive intermediate package for electrostatic sensitive components, and does not generate a charge during using. However, if electrostatic discharge occurs, it can penetrate the package and cause damage to the electrostatic sensitive component. Therefore, do not place static-sensitive components in used packaging.
(3) Static dissipative material
The static dissipative material has sufficient conductivity to allow charge to dissipate through its surface. Parts that leave the ESD work area must be packaged with static dissipative materials. In general, “black” packaging is electrostatically shielded and “pink” is antistatic. However, there are many new transparent materials on the market, which may be antistatic or even electrostatically shielded. Sometimes the using of transparent materials may cause EOS/ESD to be no longer an absolute judgement condition. Therefore, when choosing an antistatic material, pcb manufacturers should not be misled by the “color” of the packaging material.
